Five Seven Five
By C.E. Wilson
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Synopsis:

Take only what can be used. Take only what won’t be missed. The Creators are watching all of us.

White Frost lives in a world cloaked in darkness and ignorance. While most people in her society are content to live in fearful peace, White’s cousin brings her words from the mysterious Unknown. Strange collections of written words that tease her that there may be more to the world than candlelight and dank hallways.

But when tragedy strikes, White can no longer rely on the words to give her solace. She must discover what lies beyond the only world she’s ever known… no matter the cost.

Eventually, White finds her way to the skies and there she discovers that the tantalizing clues of her words are only pale reflections of the massive and wondrous world above. Colors she never thought possible. Blinding light. And an impossible being who may or may not be the Creator of it all.

But this information comes at a price White Frost is not sure she can pay.

White’s hunger for knowledge proves to be her greatest strength and weakness as she strives to learn more. But as she learns, she has to wonder – is there such a thing as too much information? And what will happen as it brings her closer to a being who could destroy everything she’s ever known?

The round tables of the Lehua Inn’s banquet room were filling up with Mahina State faculty. The men wore subdued aloha shirts and khaki trousers; the women dressed by discipline.  Colorful Guatemalan bags, gauze skirts, and flowing gray hair marked the social sciences.   Humanities favored bold eyeglasses and hair colors not found in nature. My few female colleagues in the College of Commerce sported a nonthreatening business-y look that might be described as “Beverly Hills real estate agent.” T-shirts and shapeless jeans indicated the natural sciences.

Emma Nakamura was an accomplished biologist, and looked it.  Her wavy black hair was pulled back into an indifferent ponytail. Her face, browned and lightly freckled from hours of canoe paddling, was bare.  Her idea of dressing up for our offsite retreat was to wear a seed company t-shirt that she’d picked up for free at a conference.

I didn’t fit in anywhere. Not surprising, I suppose, for a literature Ph.D. teaching in a business school. At some point I’d have to modify my vintage wardrobe if I was going to survive in humid Mahina. I imagined my heatstroke-reddened corpse, stylish in a vermillion wool Lilli-Ann coatdress and opaque tights.

“Friggin’ Student Retention Office,” Emma pressed on her paper name tag as she beelined to the refreshment table.  “They’re about as useful as a MRSA infection.”

Excerpt from Awakening

Chapter 2

It was a weird feeling falling into the sleep. It wasn’t like falling asleep in a bed and slipping slowly into unconsciousness. Rather this was sudden, and yet there was something about this sleep that wasn’t actually like sleep at all. Here’s what all the stories forget to mention; life goes on around the cursed. I can hear the people around me talking, and I can feel them move. I just can’t talk back to them. I find it hard to keep track of time when I can’t see, but I know that it has been a while. I get a lot of visitors, and that breaks my heart, especially my mother, she has sat by my bedside on several occasions and cried. Telling me how it was all her fault and that she wished she could change what she did. All I want to do when she is like that is take her hand and tell her that it is okay, that she didn’t do anything wrong. But I can’t and every time I realise that I feel my heart break a little more.

Sometimes I dream, well it is probably more like day dreaming considering I don’t think I am really asleep. Sometimes I dream of parties and balls, with bright colours, smiling faces and laughter. I like those dreams, the make me feel restful in an odd way. They make me feel like the youthful Princess I was rather than the cursed Princess that I am. The other dreams are the ones that scare me. The one I have the most is about a village, not one I have been to I don’t think. It is always night in those dreams, and instead of the beautiful ball gowns and laughter, I’m dressed in dark leathers and am creeping around, I can smell the coppery sweet smell of the villagers’ blood pumping through their veins. What scares me most is the way that that blood calls to me, how much I want it. To feel my lips on the soft skin of a throat and the sensation of sucking it into myself, the blood coating my tongue and throat as it nourishes me. I can’t control these dreams; if I could then what happens next wouldn’t happen at all. I come across a small child, a little girl no more than 8, her blood smells sweeter then the rest, and I start to drool. That’s when I notice that two of my teeth are sharper than before, and before I know it I am sinking them into the little girl’s neck and all the sensations I wanted feel like they’re actually happening. She gives a slight whimper as I start drawing blood, and that’s when I wake up.

Spooky Girl Reads is pleased to bring to you the Chronicles of the Goblin King books 1 and 2 by Mike Phillips! Read on for more information!

About The World Below

6382790

In ancient times, magical creatures inhabited the earth. They lived on mountaintops, in fields, at the bottom of lakes and rivers. But that was long ago, before the human race declared war on the creatures they feared and hated. Now the enchanted peoples are all but gone. The only place they can hide from the ever increasing number of satellites and smart phones is in the World Below.

Mitch Hardy is going through a hard time in his life. In his early twenties, he was working his way through college when he suffered an accident that left him flat broke and physically deformed. When Mitch decides to make a fresh start in a new town, things start looking up. He finds a place to live, a decent job, good friends. He even meets a nice girl. Unknown to Mitch, his new girlfriend is one of the Elder Race, what some call the Faerie Folk. Mitch doesn’t know that Elizabeth is looking for a father she never knew. The key to finding him is somehow tied up with the mysterious Blade of Caro. Desperate, she steals the Blade from its protector, the despotic ruler of the World Below, the Dragon of Worms, Baron Finkbeiner. When Elizabeth is kidnapped by the Baron, Mitch is pulled into a world or magic and monsters he never imagined.

About Hazard of Shadows

3252096The enchanted creatures of legend still exist, hidden away in the secret places of the world. They take refuge from an age of camera phones and government labs, from people who won’t let them live in peace. One of these last places of safety is known as the World Below.
Ancient powers are at work. The Lords of Faerie seek to revenge the death of Baron Finkbeiner and recover the mysterious Blade of Caro. Hidden in the shadows, they await a chance to strike. The chance arises when an old enemy escapes the splinter realm in which he is imprisoned. Anxious to settle the debt, the Faerie Lords send him to finish the Lady Elizabeth and her Champion once and for all.
After leading the revolution against the despotic ruler of the World Below, Mitch Hardy has taken the throne. He never wanted to be king. The whole idea of a government by right of combat sits poorly with him. Growing evermore uneasy with his new position, he begins laying the framework for self-rule. The enchanted peoples have known nothing but kings, but are adapting quickly to this new idea of governing their own affairs. It goes well, but Mitch’s plans are interrupted by the arrival of old enemies. Soon he is fighting for his life against a hellish enemy, the likes of which he never imagined.

About The Book

cover

Captured by Nazis fresh from plundering ancient ruins for occult artifacts, GI Floyd Sandburg finds himself dragged behind an overloaded caravan of harried shock troops and POWs.  Among flotsam from antiquity strewn haphazardly across the desert by careless Third Reich-ers, he discovers a relic.  A very special relic; one that seems to give him the ability to travel through space and time.  Using the relic Floyd escapes, and soon finds himself hypnotized and unaccountably obsessed with his unexpected deliverance.  Deliverance at the hands of a pen-sized artifact shaped like a spear, with strange lettering on the side.  An artifact that is somehow both thrilling and repulsive at the same time.  It is too much for Floyd not to follow the Siren call of his curious soul.  He uses the relic and is taken to the world from where it came.  A world where the relic is stolen, and Floyd Marooned.  Marooned where the land is crazy and men are giants who tame all beasts, Floyd merely a curiosity to be exhibited.  But imprisonment isn’t the kind of gig to keep Floyd Sandburg licked.  He soon escapes into that realm of undiluted lore, where he is snatched up into a plot of kings to topple a hegemony and liberate the nations.  A plot stretching across eons, and with an intimate part in the politics and world-shaping of our own modern era, where the puppetmasters hide in darkness and aim to make us sheep.  With the power of the ancients, will Floyd save the world, or lose himself?

Blood and cries, thunder, fire–and the demons of the mind, or are they really real?  The Lens is calling, the focus tightens, and what was then has always been, when jets of steam burst through the starry night…

Sneak Peak

Check below for a sneak peak at The Thief and The Sacrifice!

The Journal of a Man Called Pike

There is an entry dated February 10th, 1923. The words are crossed out, but the date remains. The next readable entry is the one below.

March 10th, 1923.

I killed a prostitute…I can’t get it out of my mind, I didn’t mean to, and now this journal is incriminating me, but I don’t know what else to do…I can talk to people now, that’s the whole big irony of it; but I can’t say anything about this. I didn’t even mean to pick her up. A black guy dressed like something out of the movies came by my motel and she was strung out on his shoulder like you’d expect her to be, and he starts talking about discounts and this that and the other thing, and I didn’t want to take him up, and kept pointing to my throat, but he wouldn’t be dissuaded, and he says he’ll just let her grow on me and check back in an hour. And so she comes in and starts dancing—the woman looked reefered out of her mind, all strung out, that crazy flapper-girl curl of the twenties…glad I wasn’t a teenager here. Anyway, she starts trying to…to do what she does, and finally I just had to tell her to stop with my voice, because she was too whacked out to read my little notes. Freaked her out, and she started crying, and I’d try and talk to her, and it didn’t help because she’d hear me in her head, and so she’s crying on the bed, and whenever I try and say something she won’t listen to me, or if she does it sets her crying again and I can’t do anything but pace and drink beer, so I said, “Look, it’s all a trip, see? Just a head thing!” And she wouldn’t believe it, so I just kept repeating it and repeating it, and eventually she started to believe me—and then she comes on to me again. Can’t have that, you know these hookers are full of the worst kinda diseases…there’s a few things I value from the films I saw in basic. I wasn’t having any of it, so I pushed her off, and she says some snide comment about me being one of these talker-types, and I say, “So what? So I want to talk…”

Then it hits me: she’s a hooker, she’s on drugs, nobody will believe her anyway.

Hey, this guy talks in my head, he’s telepathic!”

Right, lady. Shut up and sleep it off.”

But officer!”

So I start feeling her out—it turns out if I talk like I think I should sound, then she’ll hear me like she thinks she should hear me. She’s still hearing me in her head, but she’s not hearing me like a disembodied voice, or whatever people hear; she’s hearing me like a normal person, because that’s what I want her to hear. Only thing is, I need more than one person to try it on; see if I can’t focus my voice. So I send her back to her pimp—I guess he was a pimp—with fifty bucks. A lot of money in the twenties—and I tell her I want her to come back with one of her friends.

She comes back the next night, same motel, another girl messed up as she was—prostitutes are dumb. Don’t let anybody tell you different. You see these movies about the noble prostitute—well, nobody’s working tricks on the street because they’re intelligent and life’s got them down. Usually it’s nasty broads who got addicted to something-or-other somehow, got mad at mommy and daddy, or decided to make it on their own without working. Lazy, narcissistic, selfish women. That’s what they are.
